Showcase Showdown #2: Carl wins with 80 cents

Showcase: Kimberly wins ($59,212 in prizes); “Shields” Showcase, Comic Books, Los Angeles Dodges Adult Baseball Camp, and Dodge Magnum

Lady Marine Lisa said she got advice on where to place the sales price tags from the entire Marine Corp., not just in the audience, but everywhere. Virginia resident Kimberly said she would accept any prize offered, but when Bob asked if she would like a blow dryer she had the idea that our host found something wrong with her hair. After Bob cleared things up, Kimberly said he had good hair too. After 18 years of watching the show, Diane finally arrived in today’s studio audience and to her surprise in Contestant’s Row. Corina found both of the “Lose Everything” signs on the Pass the Buck board. Benjamin, a student and left-handed baseball player from Menlo University got to play Plinko today. Bob added baseball analogies to the suspense of watching the Plinko chips fall. Carl was nearing the actual price of the Trip to Mazatlan, but decided to scale back by a few hundred dollars. Carl hugged Corina after beating her score in Showcase Showdown #2. Today’s Showcase featured an appearance by “The Price is Right Pirate Ship”, a Ski Boat, and a Dodge Magnum. We end today's show with Kimberly celebrating inside and in front of her second new automobile.

Clock Game: Eleanor wins (4 seconds left); Outdoor Clock ($872) and Computer Desk ($948) (+$1000)

Step Up: John wins Cotton Candy Machine, SCUBA Equipment, Motorcycle, and $1500 (excluding the Food Server)

Let ‘Em Roll: Maureen wins $4000 in 1 Roll; Chevy Cobalt

Double Prices: Theodore lost; 65-inch High Definition TV ($3998)

Showcase Showdown #2: Theodore wins with $1.00 ($1000)

Showcase: Theodore wins ($15,913 in prizes); Dining Room Group, Patio Set, and Hot Tub

Eleanor left no time to spare in her run of prices in the Clock Game. Bob was glad that it was all over once Eleanor said the Computer Desk’s correct price of $948. John and his mother Rosalinda were in the audience that day as part of her birthday celebration, and it just got better when John was called to come on down. Proudly representing the state of Florida was Maureen, who left the show $4000 richer in spite of the audience members telling her to roll the cubes again in Let ‘Em Roll. Theodore managed to pass Helen with the idea that he had the winning bid on a 3 in 1 Game Table. Thomas was the latest contestant to win One Away by having only the first number in the price of the automobile correct before changing the last four numbers. Bob built up some tension as he about to reveal the price of the Electric Guitar. Viewers such as myself figured that Theodore, after his last attempt of getting on stage, would legitimately walk on stage this time. Theodore got 50 cents in two spins of the Big Wheel. After Thomas failed to to tie $1.00, Theodore gave him the first of many friendly hugs to come. Today’s Showcase featured students who have misbehaved, a Chrysler 400, and a Patio Set. Theodore hugged Maureen after the actual retail price of her Showcase was revealed. We end today’s show with Theodore and his crew celebrating (with hugs and smiles) a victory that seemed unlikely for much of today’s show.

Reaction from around the blogosphere regarding the anointing of Drew Carey as the next host of The Price is Right:

ern56.livejournal.com

Well, I cannot even begin to describe to you how happy this makes me. It's a really, really odd thing to be happy about, but damnit, I love The Price is Right, and I love Drew Carey, and this has the potential to rock.

41MilesToFreedom

There is only one thing he MUST NOT do, and that is try to be Bob Barker. If he does that, he’s finished before he starts. He has to try to bring his own style; doing that won’t kill the show. It is and always has been centered around the contestants and games anyway, so if he lets them stand out, he should be fine. He may need a while to find a comfort zone, but he deserves a chance. Honestly, my saying this is the first sign to me that this show can succeed without Barker - as big a Barker guy as I am, I’m just as big on the show in general. More than anything, I’d like to see it succeed and continue on. As long as Carey is content being his own man, he can get the job done. Replacing a legend will be easier the less like the legend he tries to be.

gi_trekker2.livejournal.com

Drew Carey is a fat, obnoxious slob who isn't a tenth as funny as he thinks he is. Bob Barker brought a sense of dignity and class to a game show -- no easy trick, and Carey doesn't have the slightest clue what dignity and class even is. I've enjoyed The Price is Right since it started in the early 1970's, but I guess I'm done now. This would just be too painful to watch.

Dave in Texas

He’ll do fine I suppose. He’s a fairly entertaining guy, and works well in front of a live audience. He’ll certainly be a lot funnier than Rosie, although I admit the bar isn’t set very high with that. His work on Whose Line is it Anyway was decent.

My personal stance? I'm not absolutely thrilled with the choice; being a diehard fan, I was looking for someone with a little more game show experience; someone who would let the show's spotlight shine on the contestants and games rather than himself. Drew strikes me as an attention-grabbing decision. However, when I step back and look at the demographics, he probably isn't a bad pick ratings-wise. He's a name the average Joe has heard of. Unfortunately, Mark Steines and Todd Newton can't say that. And from listening to some of his comments, both in print and the Late Show, he seems to get that he has to treat the show the same way it's always been treated-- not try to turn it into some stand-up comedy brunch-hour.

Reader Tom G astutely alerted us to the fact that within the last hour comedian-actor Drew Carey has confirmed he will be the new host of The Price is Right, replacing the recently retired Bob Barker.

The news was confirmed during a taping of this evening's episode of the "Late Show" with David Letterman.

Carey will also host a new CBS prime-time game show, "The Power of 10," that will premiere next month. Carey told the Associated Press that CBS officials first contacted him about TPiR immediately after he completed a pilot of the other game show this spring.

More if anything pertinent becomes available.

Carey confirms talks with CBS

Saturday, July 21

Actor-comedian Drew Carey confirmed he is in talks with CBS about his telling Los Angeles studio guests to come on down on The Price is Right.

The comic and current host of CBS' quiz show The Power of 10 emerged about a month ago as the front-runner to replace the venerable host Bob Barker, who retired as a game show host earlier this year, Variety reported Friday.

On Thursday, Carey said the talks have moved to the point of finalizing the details on a deal.

"It's going back and forth. We call them one day, and they call us the next day," Carey said. "I think it would be really fun to do. I wouldn't have gone into negotiations with them if I didn't think I would be good at it."

Comic Drew Carey is the next contender for “The Price Is Right.”

CBS confirmed Wednesday it is talking with Carey about replacing Bob Barker on the venerable game show. Barker retired from the show in May after 35 years as host.

Boston Herald

Doesn't look like Drew Carey is official by any stretch of the imagination, but he has been the hot topic for the last couple of days in both the online and television media.

Drew Carey the final choice?

Wednesday, July 18

Rumor at golden-road.net is that Drew Carey was announced as the next host of The Price is Right on E! earlier tonight. No confirmation as to whether this is the case, or merely the network rehashing news articles like this one from CBS 2 in Los Angeles.

Right now, without confirmation, we aren't putting much stock into the rumor, especially since it's over an hour old without a second source. More news as it becomes available.

Canadian-based computer game maker Ludia has a Price is Right game with a target release date of Christmas 2007.

Part of the press release:

Montreal, Canada, July 16, 2007 – Ludia Inc., publisher and developer of casual video games, today announced that its premiere title will be based on FremantleMedia’s “The Price is Right” the hugely popular television franchise.

The multi-year, exclusive agreement between Ludia and FremantleMedia will result in video games based on “The Price is Right” TV show across all major gaming platforms.

Interesting to note it has a deal for the game to go across all platforms. It seems like they are focused on the PC version, but if that is deemed a success, a port to Playstation or even the Wii (think about spinning the wheel for real in your living room!) can't be far behind.

From BuzzerBlog (apparently via the NY Post):

According to the New York Post (so take this as you will), CBS is finally narrowing the The Price is Right hosting field. Supposedly the two finalists as of now are Todd Newton and current Entertainment Tonight host Mark Steines. Sources are saying that George Hamilton is now out of the running and the status of David Price and John O’Hurley, the other two names being mentioned for the gig, is unknown.

From what sources told us, we’ve heard that Mark Steines is the strongest of the bunch so far. CBS has been very tight-lipped about who gets the position, which is rumored to have a paycheck of $3 million a year. They haven’t given a ballpark date of when the announcement will be made either. This has been your daily Price is Right host update. We’ll probably be back in about 15 minutes with another two front runners.

“The Time Has Come” appeared before the eyes of viewers during the opening of today’s show. Malibu, California resident Alex, a student of religion said in his description of Freeze Frame that he would have to “look at something”. Unlike some members of the audience, Alex was patient as he waited for the digits in his price of the trip to come around. Bob introduced the Leverotte family in the audience after the first commercial break. Karen, formerly of Savannah, Georgia and now a resident of Long Beach played Plinko. I wonder what Bob meant by “back in the same ‘0’ ” after Karen’s first Plinko chip fell into the $0 slot. Karen “got the message”, according to Bob when her third Plinko chip fell into the $10,000 slot after the last two fell into the $0 slot. “You are a rich woman”, said Bob as Karen left the stage $10,200 (minus taxes) richer. Due to time constraints, we had an early commercial break after Showcase Showdown #1 just seconds before Bob could give our announcer Rich the cue to give out ticket information. Phillip, a 1 ½ year member of the Marines on that day of taping rolled a “6” in his first and second rolls in the Dice Game. He relied upon the advice of a corporal officer in the Marines to go “higher” than the “4” in his third roll. Bob’s advice for Phillip after hearing about the corporal officer was to leave him alone. Diane went against members of the audience shouting “2” and “3” for the quantity of Olive Oil to buy in Bullseye. She could have won the game early on with 2 purchases of Olive Oil instead of 4. Just as Diane was about to spin the Big Wheel to break a tie with Jessica, Bob remembered to ask Jessica if she wants to spin again to avoid the Spinoff. Jessica decided to stay with her score and the Spinoff resumed. Today’s Showcase featured threats from the planet Pluto, a game room, and a Spa to relax after fun & games. It was hard to tell whether Jessica’s reaction was positive or negative, but Bob told her that the Showcase bid was over by very little. We end this week’s worth of shows with Alex and his crew celebrating in front of the game room. Good day!

Eazy Az 1, 2, 3: David lost; Coffee Urn, High Definition TV, and Desktop Computer

Showcase Showdown #2: David wins with 95 cents

Showcase: Candice wins ($35,335 in prizes); “Surviving a Power Outage” Showcase, Doll House, Motorcycle, and Boat

Once again, my area has missed much of today's show due to an interruption for a special news report. This time it was a network decision, not the local affiliate. Oh well, I guess the January 4th show was not meant to be shown in its entirety from Mobile, Alabama to Pensacola, Florida. David, representing the state of Utah and bearer of a Denver Broncos cap stirred up some negative reaction from the audience. He placed the first block beside the Desktop Computer with the idea of the Coffee Urn being more expensive. Bob knew well that the Coffee Urn was not very expensive, but he hoped for David’s sake that the Coffee Urn was the most expensive one of its kind ever offered. Unfortunately, David learned the hard way and left the stage to the sound of more “boos” from the audience. David rebounds from his Coffee Urn episode with an unbeaten score of 95 cents in Showcase Showdown #2. Today’s Showcase featured a Kitchen Set, a Dining Room Set in addition, and a very large battery at the end of the “Surviving a Power Outage” Showcase. We end today’s show with Candice and her crew celebrating in and around her new means of water transportation.

Credit Card: Tracey lost ($2000 Credit Limit); Lobster Tennis Ball Machine, Dinnerware, Coolers, Sofa, and VCR/DVD Player

Showcase: Barbara wins ($30,771 in prizes); Bedroom Group, Luggage, and Trip to Malaysia

“Keep Smiling” were among the words to spin on screen during the opening of the first new show of 2007. Tracey’s new hammock was priced at $1212, an interesting actual retail price. After the first commercial break, Bob promised the audience a winner in this segment. Dong, representing a group of co-workers turned out to be that winner our host was looking for as a result of choosing incorrect digits for the last four numbers in the price of the Ford automobile. Viewers got to see Derrick win two more of the small prizes featured in Punch A Bunch and the chances to hit the Punchboard. Derrick’s third prize slip was $250 and a Second Chance, but in his extra hole punched the slip only added $100 to the $250. The fourth hole punched only had a $50 slip. Today’s Showcase featured a Trip to Malaysia, the subject of a well-known painting by DaVinci, and a Ford Mustang Coup. We end today’s show with Barbara and her “cohorts”, as Bob called them, celebrating in front of the new bedroom furniture.

Rosie O'Donnell has ruled out replacing Bob Barker as host of The Price Is Right.

Barker, who stepped down earlier this month after 35 years of hosting the long-running game show, suggested while speaking to reporters at the Daytime Emmy Awards that O'Donnell - who recently left ABC daytime talker The View after an on-air fracas with a right-wing co-host - would be a suitable successor.

O'Donnell has revealed on her blog that while she had a "nice lunch" with the show's producers on Friday, she didn't want to "uproot" her family and move to Los Angeles to take over as host of the programme.
